#StudentsAndThePhilippineBiodiversity
Students had a chance to explore the environment of the university during the hike to the upper campus. After reaching the College of Forestry, participants visited the Museum of Natural History. The museum served as an eye-opener to the students on how diverse the flora and fauna in the Philippines. The participants pointed out that the most interesting part in the museum tour is the observation of the stages of fetal development depicted in the preserved specimens of human at various months. They were able to compare how the fetal of various mammals differ from the humans using the same exhibit.
Diversity in the animal kingdom was observed by the students through the preserved specimens of birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and various invertebrates. They also had a chance to have a close encounter to the endemic species of jade vine at the museum trellis.
After exploring majority of the members of the animal kingdom, students had a fun hike down the Makiling Botanic Gardens wherein they had an opportunity to experience a forest ecosystem. During the hike at the gardens, Mr. Calpo introduced to the students the various endemic and indigenous dipterocarps in the Philippines. The students were amazed with the different species of plants and insects that they encountered in the garden. They are not familiar with those since they do not commonly encounter it in the urbanized Cavite City. |

During the trip back to Cavite City, the students shared their various thoughts and feeling during the event they attended in the university. It can be summarized into these:
1. There is a great difference in the environment that they observed at the foot of Mount Makiling compared to that in Cavite City that they normally experience. Students realized that the environment in Los Banos is far better than the environment in Cavite. They have that feeling of sorry to the current condition of the city which is far from the ideal pollution-free and environment-friendly.
2. Biodiversity is an essential aspect of ecosystem that should be given a priority. Students were enlightened on how rich the Philippines is and also how threatened it is too.

Special thanks to the UP Cell Biological Society for giving the students a chance to explore science in a deeper manner.
